There Is A Foul Odor Coming
From My Shower Floor,
What Could It Be?
If you detect a foul odor coming from your shower floor, you can pretty much count on a clog being the source of the problem. Many people turn to Liquid Plumber of Drano type drain cleaners when they first experience a clog. If the clog is due to a build up of hair or other matter, these liquid drain cleaners will be ineffective at treating the problem. Additionally, if you add liquid drain cleaners and they don’t make it past a clog, they will add to the clog and can help create or just add to the foul odor.
Sometimes the odor may be the result of bacteria that is growing underneath the metal plate that covers the shower drain. This is called “biofilm” and can be washed away. If this is the case, you will need to remove the drain strainer so that you can clean underneath. With the cover off, you should be able to see into the drainpipe, and can then clean it out. This can be accomplished with soap and water and a long brush. If you thoroughly clean out the drainpipe and continue to smell the foul odor, you may want to contact a local plumber for further investigation.
