Why the Hot Water Runs Out During a Shower

If your hot water runs out during your shower there are a number of reasons why this may be happening. You will need to do a little investigation and diagnosis to understand why you are running out of hot water and what you will need to do to fix the problem. Running out of hot water in the shower is not the way that anyone wants to start the day.

The reasons why a shower runs out of hot water are fairly simple. If you have an older hot water heater the reason may be a broken fill tube. In the early 1990’s one prominent manufacturer of fill tubes had a production problem that caused many of their fill tubes to fail. This means that when the water heater pulls in water from the supply line the cold water immediately mixes with the remaining warm water at the top of the tank instead of settling on the bottom of the tank where it can be warmed by the burner and rise to the top. A sure indication that this may be your problem is finding small pieces of plastic in your faucet filters.

Another reason why the shower runs out of hot water is that you have a hot water heater that has too small of a capacity for your family. Your hot water heater should have between ten and fifteen gallons of capacity for each adult in your household. If the current water heater does not have enough capacity it will run out of hot water.

Regardless of why the hot water runs out during a shower you should contact a qualified repair professional who can recommend and install a hot water heater that better suits the needs of you and your family. And don’t forget, water heaters today are far more efficient than those from ten or fifteen years ago.
