When you go out to eat for breakfast, do you ask the restaurant manager how much he paid for the eggs, potatoes, and bacon on your plate?
Of course not, though everyone expects the cost of the food to be marked up by a huge margin.
If you took a taxi to your breakfast, you’d fully expect to pay a trip charge as well as a tip.
But when it comes to plumbing, consumers sometimes have unfair expectations. They think, “If I knew how to solder, I could fix plumbing problems myself.”
They ask, “That faucet only costs $40 at the store, why are you charging so much to install it?” More goes into soldering pipes or installing a faucet than goes into most breakfasts.
Besides the charge for his expertise, you need to factor in that a plumber has the expense of a plumbing truck, tools, and parts. Not to mention a plumber is expected to have liability insurance and be trained to prevent or correct any potential problems that could occur during a service call.

As a consumer, I can understand the fear of overpaying. However, the next time that you hire a plumber, try to consider all the expenses that go into plumbing work. That, or start bugging restaurant managers – you know, to be fair.

Yes this scenario occurs a least 12 times a year , When the customer wants to supply all of their own material and they just either want labor prices quoted or just willing to pay for labor. Meanwhile the customer truly believes that they have now just purchased the best quality material or plumbing fixtures that meets state code standards and that since they bought it I should also warranty it. But once the job has been started & more material is required or found missing parts or defective and customer is tired of making the trips to the local home center. Thats when the scenario falls apart and returns to the orginal procedure. Pricing by the job not by the Hour.
I understand that plumbing is a skilled trade, I am will to pay for the job to get done the right way. But in hard times I have to save up to get my pipes fixed. I have a leak in my sewage pipes in my basement. When I do laundry it sprays out and hits the wall. I have a huge tote collecting most of the water waste. I am broke… I am getting married in one month, we are thinking of using our honeymoon money to fix our home. I just want a clue of what kind of cost is headed my way. I’m guessing the longer I wait the worst it will be. Can some please give me a clue on what the cost will be? And do plumbers alow you to make payments? ~ Thanks
